Understanding Stress and Mental Wellness
By Dr. Koriang Hilder · 5 February 2026
Stress is not a character flaw. It is how our minds and bodies respond to pressure — deadlines, caregiving, financial worry, grief, or uncertainty.
When stress becomes a health conversation
Occasional stress is expected. Consider speaking with a qualified professional if you notice:
- Persistent sleep disruption
- Loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy
- Overwhelming anxiety that interferes with daily life
- Physical symptoms without a clear medical explanation
Early support matters. Mental health care is healthcare.
Practical grounding tools
These are educational strategies, not treatments:
- Name the stressor — writing it down can reduce its mental weight
- Boundaries — protecting time for rest is preventive care
- Connection — trusted friends, counsellors, or clinicians can help you process what you carry alone
Reducing stigma
Normalising mental wellness conversations — especially among women and young adults — creates room for people to seek help sooner.
If you are in crisis, contact local emergency services or a trusted mental health helpline in your country.
