Understanding Stress and Mental Wellness

By Dr. Koriang Hilder · 5 February 2026

Stress is not a character flaw. It is how our minds and bodies respond to pressure — deadlines, caregiving, financial worry, grief, or uncertainty.

When stress becomes a health conversation

Occasional stress is expected. Consider speaking with a qualified professional if you notice:

  • Persistent sleep disruption
  • Loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy
  • Overwhelming anxiety that interferes with daily life
  • Physical symptoms without a clear medical explanation

Early support matters. Mental health care is healthcare.

Practical grounding tools

These are educational strategies, not treatments:

  • Name the stressor — writing it down can reduce its mental weight
  • Boundaries — protecting time for rest is preventive care
  • Connection — trusted friends, counsellors, or clinicians can help you process what you carry alone

Reducing stigma

Normalising mental wellness conversations — especially among women and young adults — creates room for people to seek help sooner.

If you are in crisis, contact local emergency services or a trusted mental health helpline in your country.
